Flying Talon grins

I made a "Flying Talon" last year while feeling creative by taking the throwing knife off my 'beaner and attaching an old garden rake head piece by forcing the 'beaner over and into some of the spokes/tines that make up the rake head thus creating a formidable flying claw.

Despite being heavy as hell and burning a few rope lines into my forearms, it was a complete success with a minor fly-by scraping of the groin area lol that could have ended in traumedy (tragic comedy) were it an inch closer to said groin.

The key to keeping it in the air is to force your arms to be fully extended as much as necessary to keep the wide fan head from the body (it's about a foot and a half across). The next step is to just wrap it in Kevlar or something and burn the house down :p

Summer Fun!

One of my favourite things to do in the summer is to go to the dollar store and pick up a bag of water balloons for 2 bucks and get a bored friend to come outside with you and your filled water balloons for some rope dart target practice! Try getting your oh so understandably entertained friend to lob them across your field of view and even straight at you if you dare! Warning: the second throwing procedure will get you wet. Second warning: this can lead to fun-ness.

Recommendations: do it when it's too f@#%ing hot and where you don't intend to clean up the plastic popped balloon mess if you're really lazy and like to litter. 3rd warning: littering is fun yet illegal in most places that aren't mexico. i'm pretty sure littering is encouraged in mexico.

And tell me if you can beat 4 balloon pops in a row :)

Hot to tie a Knot

Ok all I have pieces i have wicks i have rope and chains and quicklinks oh my.. but what knots do you use to keep that monster dart in check? A knot that ties into the dart end and for those that do use a knot at the non dart end (which i prefer) which knot do you use and how is it done or is is it the formal name i can look up a how to, would also work as good. Thanks all!

Monkey fist, copper, kevlar and all that jazz

Hello everyone, I just recently purchased 30 ft of 1/2 inch kevlar rope. I was planning on making a rope dart with a rather large monkey fist at the end. Then I was going to take some 20 feet 8 gauge copper wire and weave it all through the knot with the hope that the flame will have a bit of a greenish tint to it, and to help keep the monkey fist together. Does this sound like a good idea? Thoughts, questions, criticisms?

Behind the back pendulum variations

So Darters...

I want to build a dart, after years of slinging single and double chains, and I was wondering how to best configure it? It appears that a long skinny knot is better than a big round monkeyfist, so I was wondering...

A 4-strand braid out of rope wick, (snakes style)?

or a catherdral fold out of a flat wick?

Does anyone know any knots to make a long skinny fuel-holding object of mayhem?

What kind or rope is best, length, thickness etc.. for the rope part?

Any input would be appreciated folks!

Tail Knot Debate

Does anyone else tie a knot at the non-dart end of their rope dart? Every dart i've ever ordered was un-knotted. I've never roped without one, or a "Dragon's Tail" as i prefer to call it, usually with a bit of rope frill hanging out the back of the knot for decorative purposes. The reasons for the knot are: so i know when i'm out of rope and have something to pinch on to if i'm blindfolded and can prevent it from flying at bystanders; it adds a bit more play to the non dart end that forces you to play with/be wary of the dragon's tail as it can whip you quite hard; and for using the dart as a whip by grabbing the dart if so desired.

Share your thoughts and experiences please.

Look Ma! No hands!

i've been getting decent these days on manipulating the dart without the use of hands--shooting it off the forearm, legs, neck, teeth, shoulder--whatever to keep it moving, the closest thing to a hand grab being pinching the dart with your wrist by moving the hand down to pinch the rope in the crease and/or changing wrist rotations slightly to effectively control the dart. Pretty crazy stuff, i highly recommend trying it. The hard part is developing the sudden ''shuddering'' force to loose the rope wrapped around your arms or legs to cause it to shoot off. Anyhoo, lemme know your thoughts and feelings on this :p

We need your input on our future rope dart and meteor designs.

I want to thank all the fire community for all the input you guys have provided to us and, and I would like to get some more feed back. Trick Concepts will be introducing Meteors and Rope Darts within the next month or so and we want to make sure we make them how you want. Our tentative plan is to offer several “poi type” fire head options for the wick, followed by 1 ft of twisted link chain and then securely attach it to a rope. Up to this point, I think it is fairly straight forward. My big question is what type of rope is preferred. I am looking at the following options:

1. Kevlar with Kevlar core.
2. Cotton bondage type rope
3. Soft braided cotton with Nylon Core
4. Cotton with steel cable core.
5. Twisted cotton

We will consider offering more than one option if there is a lot of different preferences.

Here are the advantages and disadvantages I see with each. There may be some factors I have forgotten.

1. Kevlar with Kevlar core: This is a good durable rope with medium flexibility. It is pricy, but the price is no prohibitive. I am mostly wondering if there are any undesirable properties, such as hard on the hands, etc.

2. Cotton bondage type rope: This will probably be your softest and more flexible rope. It is probably also the weakest, but at ½” diameter, it should be plenty strong.

3. Soft braided cotton with Nylon Core: This rope should be easy on the hands, and quite strong with the nylon core. This is a fairly flexible rope. I am not overly concerned with the nylon melting, because it is encased in the cotton and there will be good separation between the fire and the rope. This rope may have slight design patterns in it because it is used for nautical purposes. If the demand is sufficient, we may be able to have it custom made or dyed.

4. Cotton with steel cable core: This is a unique option because it can eliminate the link chain. The handle part can be made of soft cotton, and it can be striped down to cable on the fire ends. This makes for a continuous tool with no links, chains, knots or couplings along its length. Because of the steel core, this rope will be a bit stiffer. We currently only have this available up to 3/8” diameter, but we can probably find larger if there is a demand.

5. Twisted cotton: The twisted cotton will probably be harder on the hands and will be fairly stiff. This rope has the option of being braided back upon itself for a clean loop.

If you know of another type of rope that we have missed, let us know. We have ruled out any ropes that will melt.

What size rope is preferred? I was planning on using ½” or similar.

Do you prefer a stiffer rope or a softer rope?

Has anyone made a meteor that has a rigid handle in the middle, with chain coming out each end? I would make it from an aluminum tube for the handle and put a chuck swivel on each end. I am not sure if this has been done, but it would be like a looser version of a segmented staff.

Anyhow, this is your chance to influence our designs before we start making product. We greatly appreciate any input.

Ay Yai Eye!

Has anyone tried closing their eyes and just 'feeling' the rope and what they are doing? i started doing so about a year ago to the day and i can do roughly 90% of my repertoire blindfolded now, with some complications on certain leg wraps and blindly catching the dart at the end of the routine in the pull back at the end of the full extension. The main idea is to just maintain tension on the rope the entire time until you can ''see'' where the rope and the dart is at any given point in time. Eventually you don't even have to focus on ''seeing'' it and the movements should be extremely natural and flowing by that point, as if you're almost psychically controlling it. Maybe i'm just crazy or what, but i found i've gone leaps and bounds in my training since i started smoking green to heighten sensitivity and relaxingly shutting my eyes to feel it.....it's really just great for letting go of tension, almost makes the manipulation of the dart meditative. Bam.

Not sure if everyone here is quite as nuts as i am but has anyone tried "Drunken Rope Dart"? i'm not talking about just incorporating drunken forms/moves into a rope dart routine but also getting quite hammered during practice....it's really quite something. i find i can get my dart moving at insane speeds due to the lack of care about being hit by the dart which is only about 6 oz in the first place, with very minor to non-existent injuries ensuing. i also find i teach myself a lot of new crazy moves, wraps and shots owing to the ever-changing state the mind is in complemented by the looseness of the body...really gets the joints limbered up :p.

Here's the warning: i'm a fairly accomplished alcoholic and i practice my rope dart everyday. i'm also a pothead and find i get an instant Zen state from a puff, especially in combination with good old boozeahol, which really gets the creative juices flowing. i'd highly recommend trying this out, you'd be amazed what you can do when you're trashed. Seeing as how me and my friends are drunk and/or stoned most of the time, we find it necessary to train in these dizzying states of mind due to the fact that we are probably going to have to use them in said state should the opportunity arise. Not the best idea for everyone, but if you can handle a mean stinking drunk and want to allay any fears of the dart for an enlightening practice session, try it out. i recommend a good bottle of plum wine or 2 to be drank throughout the workout or some good Saké or a few good beer (6 should do in the course of an hour or 2). Hard liquor tends to tire one out too quickly and make your movements sluggish, but everyone is different. Should be interesting to see what comes out of this.....enjoy!

Rope Dart in Shaolin/Tibet

Guys,

I am competing in a competition in China. I was the top selected athlete for the US. Part of the competition will be held in the Shaolin Temple (with the cooperation/sponsorship of the Shaolin Monks) and Tibet.

I am going out there and representing rope dart, hook swords, pudao, and mantis. I will be dropping some lines and posting some vids. Wish me luck.

I have decided to release a rope dart instructional video with a major martial arts company. The video takes you step by step through rope dart basics (just as you would learn in China). It is a 9 week program, with 4 weeks of basics, and 5 weeks of going through an entire form. The form is a traditional rope dart form (this video does not contain advanced tricking i.e. 720 body wraps, 540 neck spins, split throws, etc.,).

So how big is your head?

Mine "only" weighs one pound and is slightly larger than a baseball. Okay let my clarify -- no South American witchdoctor has shrunken my head (although, the mental image makes me grin), but this is the weight and size of the wick I use on my ropedart.

Tog (a member of my fire troupe, and this tribe) is always commenting that he thinks that this weight is excessive. I on the other hand don't understand why he uses such a "light" rig. I feel that a "heavier" setup allows for better control, especially during extensions
(aka... during throws).

My only thought is that my paticular style, one that uses lots of extensions and wraps, as opposed to a style that is focused more on flow, works better with a "heavier" head.

I'm curious what everone else uses on their ropedarts. Weight, size, and why you prefer / think that a lighter or heavier "dart" is better. Also, a brief description of your paticular style might help spread some light on if this is partially effects your choice.

so i wanted to share some things ive figured out..jus to get em out there
the firs one is a kick but instead of the rope/circle spinning verticly the rope is spunn
horizontally like a lasso.
you spin the rope from your right to left above the head..the rope should be about 5ft of play
you then bring the circle down and in front of you
as the rope spins close to your left you raise your left foot and catch the spin with your toe
making a smaller circle and a shot
i like this one cause you can spin with the rope and decide to kick it in any direction 360

the other is a continuous neck wrap
you start with the spin going from behind to infront
play with as much slack as you can get awaywith without it hitting the ground
then wrap 3 times on your neck
on the third wrap switch the spin to the other side of your body alowing it to unwrap
you have your choice of quickly switching left to right to make a fast small circle of fire on both
sides of your head or letting the wrap undo twice then switching back and rewrapping

the neck burn is a pain in the neck.....
but its butifulllll

Wildfire is the largest festival specificaly for performing artists to learn and to share. No spectators, just fellow performers. We largely cater to fire people.

Happened during a performance. The airplane wire I was using to hold it together finally gave way. All I knew was that my dart went out a lot sooner than it normally does. Thankfully it stayed mostly together so no one was hit.

kick plane transitions.

I sortof mentioned these on a thread over winter. Things have thawed, so it's time for me to turn talk into show. The move is done PAINFULLY slow here, and always with my left leg (my right horizontal kick is about one in three).

The theory is that when the dart head is at the end of the shot, it has no residual motion and will return in whatever way you pull it back. Practice isn't that easy, because we've most only returned a shot by pulling into a vertical plane descending spin. A little arm-flick can make that a horizontal plane return instead.

So vertical kick to horizontal is pretty straight forward. Horizontal kick is somewhat more difficult. You want to get the rope to come around near the heelside of your arch( If you have boots, they make heel moves like this eaiser, what with the raised heel. ) The release is a strange flicking motion, where you pull your heel out of the small circle. Might help to twist the foot too.

So, I'm preparing to teach a rope dart class at Firedrums. I did one last time, and it wasn't that great. This time I want to break down the motions into traditional and showey motions. I'm pretty good with showey shit, but the traditional stuff, I could use some brushing up. So I went back to my store of Kung Fu films, and Youtube.

In terms of old hokey Kung Fu videos, I suggest anything form the Yen Wo Ping family, specifically "Drunken Tai Chi" has some amazing dart work done with a paintbrush on a rope.

But youtube vids, I can share.

For content, this guy is very good at interjecting very simple shots inbetween complex body wraps. I find it useful to see other people's permutations on wraps. His strengths are the wraps and his use of very simple shots, most are either hand-thrown or from the elbow.

Here, there are NO SHOTS, but it is kept f'in awesome with some cool bodywraps and amazing bodywork. The breakdancing moves towards the end are sweet too. Kudos to whomever adapts that for fire.

Note the precision of this guy's planes, and also how he uses his left hand a lot as a second point of control on the weapon. Two person dart

Last night I was experimenting with catching and returning someone else's dart, as well as a few simple wraps. Has anyone else played with these? what works well?

On another note, I made a new dart, out of a pillow that goes "boing!" when you hit something (someone) with it. The thing does not fly very well, but is quite fun to play with.

Boston rope dart

I've been into poi for a few years, and picked up rope dart a couple months ago. I've eaten up what I can find on the internet, and absorbed a fair amount of classical chinese rope dart into my repituar. Long story short, I'm looking for folks in the Boston area who are either well versed in rope dart, or wanting to learn and experiment with it, or even better, BOTH. There's a weekly poi/firespinning class held at BU that I attend regularly where anyone interested could meet up and play.

Yeah, weird concept, I know.

So, Mystress Fyre over at The Crucible (Oakland, CA) has convinced me to come teach a class there. I guess it didn't really take much convincing, actually...

I teach people dart moves all the time at jams and stuff, but some people learn better in a structured class sort of environment. So, there it is. Class size is limited because darts take a lot of space, so if you or someone you know is interested, best to sign up sooner rather than later.

extend your left foot out in front at chest level or so
and catch the spin and wrap it twice on your foot
put down your foot with dart twined on the end
switch stance and kick the mother off

so me and my bud brent got together last night for some whiskey
we drank and spun some fire.
it was ok, realizing we were nowhere near where we wantedto be
we finnished a bottle of jim and half a bottle of some cinnimon 100 proof shit
now let me tell ya
brents into the whole kungfoo ill kill you with a toothpick thing
and he beat the living shit out of me throughout the knight
and the someone "prolly me" had the great idea to spar with fire rope darts
all i gotta say is drunk on fire on ice .
set the mother fuckers head on fire first off.
and i dont know how it happened but he got me on my crown
and i was eating snow for about five min
b;ut
through the drunken inferno we both realized that coreography with 2 rope darts. \
has the potential of being realy bad ass.
we were doing alot of tandem moves.
some give and take shit.
neadless to say im all busted up

Rope Dart Construction ?

Hi everyone. My name is Albie, I'm new to rope dart, and I absolutely love it! I have a back ground in poi and staff work. I made my first dart 4 days ago out of an 8ft piece of # 15 ball chain, put a caribener on one end so I could loop the chain around my wrist.
At the other end I have a small cathedral wick that came off a set of poi because it's twin went missing.

It's rather heavy due to being chain and takes some wrist muscle to get it going. What would be the best rope to use to replace the chain ? I'm assuming I should leave a small piece of chain so that the rope isn't caught on fire.

Any all replies are greatly appreciated!!

Meteor hammer ropes?

ok im trying to learn meteor hammer, without any instructors... im pretty good with just watching ppl anyway but w/e ill get it eventually. anyway im looking for rope to use for it, ill be tying the end in a monkey fist because im not too good and dont want to hurt myself too bad, so far all i can do is some simple wraps around the hand and neck, but anyway ive been practising with a 6' rope thats 1'' thick and that wont work into a monkey fist so it has a knot instead, but i love this rope because it is EXTREMELY soft and no friction at all, i kno its some kind of polyblend or something because i was just at a store about to by 50' of what i think was good rope that was 3/8 inch and was going to make it into two 20' ropes and one 10' rope as an extra.

so does anyone know what exactly kinda rope i should be trying to get for meteor hammer, eventually i will add wieght but i do have to make a monkey fist just because it makes for soft impact and im living at home. btw im not 20 im a lil younger but pretty skilled in something ive never done before.

It's request hour!

I just checked youtube and noticed that I've gotten aproximatly 2400 views on my little videos that I slapped together. This is incredible. It started out as me being bored one day in my crappy warehouse in south oakland, and exploded from there, but I've not done anything more in nearly two months (probably because of the work for 2πr and DDI), but I'm done with other projects now, and I am really excited about getting back into making videos.

On my slate are the following:
Scorpion's Tail
Horizontal Plane simple wraps
H-Plane empty knots
H-plane tricks
inside/buzzsaw motions and how to access otherwise difficult performance spaces
(And those are the easy bits Here are the difficult bits)
Complex wraps and escaping complex wraps with a shot
double leg empty knot to heel-kick (aka the wu-shu spry bastard move)
basic acrobatics
a giant cathedral wick how-to (including powertools! Yay!)
Make a website where I can showcase these videos and put google ads on, possibly create a Fire Rope Dart forum somewhere.

Any feedback about these great plans? Anything you people want to see sooner than later? Anything you think needs re-done from the older vids?

p.s.: I've sortof been hedging on spreading the li jen heng video, and I think I'm going to stop sending it out, the more I make these, the more I feel an attachment to my works. If anyone can show me that his videos are opensourced or not copyrighted, I'll spread them. Otherwise I assume them to be intellectual property of sifu li jen heng.

Changing direction

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but I did not see too much about it.

Most of the forward I have figured out shots require the dart to be spinning forward near the ground, and the ones that don't are week and hard for me to aim. Are there any more interesting ways to reverse the spin than letting it stop in it's big circle? Turning around sort of works, but only relative to you. I have also found a sort of leg wrap thing that either reverses the direction or hits me really hard on the back of the leg. I don't think it saves any time, and I look like a dog peeing on a fire hydrant. Are there any graceful/quick ways of changing direction?

Meteor Workshop?

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in learning or teaching meteor in a work shop in the bay area some time in the near future?

I was thinking of maybe just holding the workshop at a nimby jam one of these sunday nights. or we could do something during the day on say hippie hill some sunday afternoon?

I would love to teach anyone for free even if you've never touched a meteor before. We could even cover how to make a simple cheap practice meteor out of some rope and weights.

Comments? Should I break it down further, or teach it as one fluid motion? I decided to teach it here in the Wu Shu/Li Jin Heng way, of breaking all the steps apart with front-side spins, then put it together at the very end. Was that jump too abrupt?

Also, does it make any sence that I teach it from the right side, then demonstrate it on the left? (I just noticed that)

Lessons my sifu gave me: Sensetivity

So a few weeks back, I met with my sifu from Shao Lin Dao, and we talked a lot about chain whip, rope dart, and comet (ropedart like weapon, the thing in kill bill). I showed him my moves and basic shots, and he thought it was good, but that I was fundamentally missing the point.

Body + neck wraps: Sensitivity:
He took me first to 9 section chain whip, and told me to swing it in the wall plane, and on an upswing, stick my left hand in and make a circle within a circle. feel the circle, and make the smaller circle flow inside the big circle, to be able to smoothly control the circle.

Then take the little circle across the body the same way. Smooth.

From that motion, the neck and leg wraps come from, In chain whip, the wraps are to accelerate the whip into a strike, so watch the speed as you decrease radius. From the neck wraps, work at letting go of the rope and compleatly controlling the dart from your neck. Move it back and forth in continuious wraps. Staying in a wrap for a long time will be extremely uncomfortable, and you'll get more and more sloppy the longer the wrap goes. Just work at it, make them all crisp and in distinct planes.

Next, shot from foot, reversing direction, "bird kicks the branch"
As the dart is decending infront of you, you wish to shoot out forward, low. As it decends the foot kicks towards the dart end, and the dart shoots straight out. Looks really easy: Big trick.
Break the motion down into two steps. Catch with the foot, and then return direction. As the dart decends, stick the foot into the plane, and as it hits, yield to the motion and "catch" the dart with your foot.

From the dart resting on your foot, kick it out and into an acending spin. This goes back to sensitivity excercises, you aren't just flaling at the dart with a kick, it is a controlled and slow motion, just executed together, smoothly. The biggest thing is to remember however you do it that it is a catch, then a kick out. That way you can be much more surgical about where you are shooting towards, and not just fireing it wildly.

Weekley Dart Gathering

Greetings! I've been a silent watcher on here for a while now- but I think I would like to say a few things... I would really like to get an organized dart group in san francisco on a weekly basis. preferrably in the Aids Memorial Garden.

so I wanna know- what nights can other people be there? I can get down any night of the week after 8 pm, but I would like it to be a weekly training regimen... with the majority being other darters to train with.

I've seen Jackie Chan bust out the rope dart using rope and an horseshoe in Shanghai Noon. There's the scene in Kill Bill with the modified chain dart, though she didn't do much with it. I can't remember which movie it was, but I recall seeing Jet Li use a firehose like a ropedart, nice improvisation. I haven't seen a flaming dart in any movie though, has anyone else?

Sharing Creativity

Greetings all...

I've uploaded a pic of my fire dart I have named, The Dragon's Tail. How I came up with the idea is a long story that involves how I went a little crazy when I lost my Memory....

Since it's creation there have been several adaptations to the Dragon's Tail, mostly to make it lighter...then bigger...the change is continuious really... On a side note if anyone would be interested in having one built/customized just send a message and we'll talk more.

maybe this can be helpful, I'm working on some of them but the fire rope dart seems a bit to weighted for some of these, to me its all about flow, I don't pull out a move in a performance until I'm flowing with it.

Its amazing how many peope are not into doing the dart. I'm always getting comments on how cool it looks from other performers, yet only a handful have picked it up. Maybe the long rope is intimidating but its so easy. I think I played with one for about 5 minutes before I lit it up, I had made my own by the next night.

For me the dart bring my martial arts training full circle. When I started poi I used my footwork from martial, then went to staff and found the martial helpful but had to shit can most of it for a more thearical style. Then I found the dart and now utilize and expand my martial training.

Kicking/shooting out darts

Hey guys,

I'm relatively new to the chain whip/rope dart thing. I've got wraps down pretty well, but I'm having trouble with the kicking out/shooting out/releasing move. I'm not sure what the right term is for it...

As I swing the dart down, when it's at about 6 o'clock, if that makes sense, I'm kicking the rope quickly, which, on occasion makes the dart fly out. Usually though, the rope juut wraps round my foot, or gets caught on my foot, and the dart doesn't end up flying out.

Any suggestions? Perhaps I've got the whole thing wrong from the start.

Do anyone of you know a good way to prevent rust in a real rope dart (made of steel)??

I think that painting or varnishing won't be of much help since the dart may (and in some moves it is intented to) hit the ground sometimes and I think it will remove the paint, varnish, etc...

Moves for performance...

There's this standard set of dart moves. You know the ones -- they're on the wushu team video, the ones that show up in the martial arts competitions. They're all centered around dart-as-weapon. Lots of release dart from this, release dart from that... running and kicking and moving really quickly and precisely. Cool.

So, what about moves that have no practical application for poking people with a little metal spike. What about moves that flow around and around, that leave nice fire trails... I want to learn more of those, but I've sort of exhausted the internet video resource.

I've been coming up with stuff lately on my own, but it's slow going:

Reverse the direction of the spin on your foot instead of using your foot to project the dart outward. People do this with poi a lot. This turns out to be really handy -- you can build open knots without ever turning your body, just stand there and kick the dart around til it's all wrapped around your body, then let it go. Nifty.

Stuff in the horizontal plane. I know very little of this. Stuff like, spin the dart above your head, then drop under your legs and jump over it, maybe with a high kick. Also, there's this nice one Jared showed me where you let it wrap around one leg (skipping over it with the other foot), and then when there's still about 1.5' left unwrapped, you reverse the direction with your other foot.

Infinite neck wraps. It turns out you can wrap and unwrap your neck forever, reversing the dart on your elbow, letting it drop behind your back, spinning around with the rope across your shoulder. I'd like to learn more to do with this too, since it seems like there are a lot of possibilities.

What about the rest of you? Any moves that aren't designed to fend off the marauding hordes?

Beginner dart

I managed to completely miss at least two opportunities to learn dart stuff in person, and now I'm trying to learn on my own, so I was wondering if I could get some help to start off with. :) Because Google turns up NOTHING. Or rather, it turns up encyclopedia articles. Not tutorials.

On the making of them- I've heard from other people that they should reach from your shoulder to just above the ground; this tribe seems to be saying they should reach from the ground to your head or higher. Is this a factor of styles?
And advice on making practice darts out of household stuffs would be neat. (Mostly just the weight on the end. I assume twine is good enough for the string, especially if you braid it and use a softer material for the grip.) What I've been playing with so far is a chain-belt-thing with a Koosh ball attached to the end, and it is fun but way too light.

On the use of them -- any information you have beyond basic spinning would be more than I do. I am very familiar with poi and staff, if that will help you explain stuff.

Rope Dart & Meteor Gathering

Everyone spins poi or staff but there are not a lot of us meteor and dart people out there. I would love to take advantage of burningman to learn and teach what we know.

Id like to arrange a Rope Dart & Meteor Gathering on thursday durring the day. Hopefully in a large shade structure of some kind, we're not going to get much done in the hot sun.

If anyone has any suggestions of were we might hold this little gathering of large swinging objects let me know and I'll repost when we find a good place.

neck wraps and glasses

So, has anyone here managed to do the nifty neck wrap/unwrap/wrap move (where you switch your head from one side to the other real quick) while wearing glasses? Whenever I try it, the rope catches them behind my ear and they go flying and I have to scramble around on the ground to keep them from getting stepped on. I feel especially dorky if I'm spinning fire when this happens...

Like, is there a left-hand component to that move that I'm missing, or do I need to turn more, or should I just get contacts...?

a suitable punishment?

My erstwhile friend took the rope offa my dart and used it to tie up some stuff to haul outta my apartment. On the one hand, I'm glad that stuff is outta my apartment. On the other hand - my dart rope (!).

I got it back, the rope is fine, but still. What is a suitable punishment for this blatant disrepect for the integrity of my little buddy dart?

All suggestions will be considered and much appreciated.

huh, was just talking to some friends about how cool it'd be to do rope dart with fire and then did a random search for "wushu" on tribe and found this.

i practice wushu and know a little rope dart. do you guys learn just by watching videos? crazy.
